Is Liberal Democracy necessary for freedom of faith to survive?
The overarching theme for Progressive Christianity Forum 2025 is Challenges, Questions and Values we face in engaging with the Church and the World.
Our October speaker is Emeritus Professor Rick Sarre, asking Is Liberal Democracy necessary for freedom of faith to survive?
The idea of legislating freedom of religious faith has frustrated Australian governments over the past 5 years. No political leader wants to touch it. How can we get around this imbroglio? There is a way, but we need to keep our political composure.

Rick Sarre studied and taught theology, law, sociology, and criminology in universities in Australia, the USA, Hong Kong, Sweden and Canada. He retired as the Dean of the Law School at the University of South Australia in 2020. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, and Professorial Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Police Management. He is a member of the Clayton-Wesley congregation of the Uniting Church.
