Progressive Christianity Network Sunday Afternoon Session
Can sex, dating and flirting be supported by Alternative and Augmentative Communication?
Everyone needs love. That doesn’t sound like a controversial topic. But what about people with physical and communication disabilities? What opportunities do they have to explore this need? Dr Darryl Sellwood presents a paper which he delivered at an international conference in Mexico in July 2023. The paper reports findings from his PhD research that investigated the lived experiences of people with physical and communication disabilities in developing romantic and sexual relationships. How can we as a community support people with complex communication needs in their quest to develop intimate relationships?
Dr Darryl Sellwood is a member of Adelaide West Uniting Church. He completed his PhD in 2019 at Flinders University. An incisive and provocative thinker and an engaging speaker, he has presented at both Australian and international conferences. Dr Sellwood has complex communication needs and uses various Alternative and Augmentative Communication tools and strategies. As a computer science graduate with experience in the telecommunications field, he has a broad perspective on both user and technical issues. He currently works part time as a Scholarly Fellow at Flinders University, as part of a panel reviewing curriculum in the Disability Studies discipline.
