SEMINARY OF THE 3RD AGE – MARCH – JONATHAN BARKER
The Sem 3A theme for 2022 is Faith and Religion relating to the present age. In the March series of seminars, we examine The Relationship between Religion and Culture. Jonathan Barker will present tonight on the topic Ways Christianity relates to culture.
H Richard Niebuhr’s “Christ and Culture” has never been out of print. This ground-breaking work on how the Christian gospel relates to Western culture in particular, proposes a typology of five ways of relating, that is against, within, above, alongside and transforming culture. The presentation will ask how relevant this typology still is and reflect on how these five ways may have typified how churches related to First Nation’s peoples in the era of missions.
Jonathan’s cross-cultural interest arose when involved in the Fifth City Project on Chicago’s West Side, followed by living with the Mowanjum Aboriginal community in the Kimberleys. While Senior Community Development Officer with the Department for Community Welfare he undertook formal studies in Sociology at Flinders University. After several Uniting Church parish ministries, he was appointed to Nungalinya College Darwin as Assistant Principal and lecturer in Contextual Theology. Now actively retired.
